Archaeological sites > Villa of Livia

The villa was built along the Via Flamina, not far from the capital. It represents the first example of an imperial country residence: Livia Drusilla, wife of the emperor Augustus, owned it with her family since the Republican age.
The villa survived and kept being used until the Constantine period at least.

This suburban villa was located in the outskirt of Rome and used to be both a space of relaxation (otium) and a representative residence to host respectful guests: it was another symbol of the political authority and power of the Emperor.

The villa overlooked the Tiber valley offering an amazing view of the landscape: the reconstruction tries to recreate its architectonical structure with all the simple yet refined decorations of the imperial residence.
